Until the 1960s, the prevailing view was that the equatorial rainforest in Africa was one of the most stable ecosystems on earth.

The diversity of species (biodiversity) in plants and animals and the high production of biomass suggested that these forms of life had developed over millions of years under constant environmental conditions up to the present day.

Today we know that the rainforests are a very sensitive ecosystem that reacts extremely sensitively to direct and indirect influences. Large-scale clearing, however, interrupt this cycle - with devastating consequences. Fires release huge amounts of carbon dioxide that were previously stored in tropical forests. Over 20% of global CO2 emissions can be traced back to the destruction of tropical forests.
Forest projects, especially REDD + projects, are used to finance large-scale protective measures in the tropical rainforests.
Forests are mainly destroyed through illegal logging or slash and burn. The areas freed up in this way are used for soy cultivation or for livestock farming by large multinational corporations. Only through active protection against the irreversible destruction of thousands of square kilometers of forest can we maintain this valuable asset in our carbon footprint.
